OK MAN, we get it... we really do! you have a F A N C Y car with Daytime Running Lights.
I wonder if you know what the “Daytime” part means, because if you’re driving with your main beams off at night substituted instead by your stupid DRLs you’re an idiot!
I’ve already seen five idiots like this in this week alone, mostly FCA cars.

the funny part is those cars probably have automatic lights... i just leave mine in the auto light position

Up here in Canada, all new passenger vehicles are required to have daytime running lights. It’s been a requirement for years. But driving at night with only the daytime running lights? Bad idea. Especially since the tail lights don’t go on automatically with them.

Quoting the eloquent author of “regular car reviews”
THESE PEOPLE HAVE DICKS MADE OUT OF CHEESE.
I seriously believe that the people who do this do it on purpose and are the same people that forget about leg day on purpose.

Also, DRLs are not focused beams, so even if you’re one of those idiots that say “eer if you can see me why do you complain?”
In traffic those lights are very bright and annoying, plus you can barely see shit with em

I see DRLs at night a lot on Toyolex products around here - people mess around with the automatic lights, not knowing how the switch works (typical local Lexus buyer)

I will never forget being pulled over for this very thing, in a 90's Land Cruiser that I didn’t know had DRLs, plus the dash lights were on, and we were in an area with lots of streetlights and traffic so I couldn’t use high beams anyway. I had NO clue I had no tail lights. The officer didn’t believe me and gave me a ticket anyway. Thanks.

It’s very dangerous. Nowadays I doubt we could have that issue given that cars have autolights. These people were doing it on purpose. But they won’t get ticketed
There is a universal truth in Mexico, if you get a ticket, you fucked up badly.

I don’t think it’s been solved yet; it wasn’t 2 years ago that a relative drove his family over 2 hours on the highway in a rental car, and was baffled by all the people flashing their lights at him on the highway. He then said, “and I couldn’t figure out how to keep the high beams on, either!” I instantly knew his problem, his headlights weren’t on at all, just DRLs.
WTF

My car has weird DRLs. It has quad headlights. The outer pair are low beam only, and the inner pair are high beams, but those use a dual filament bulb (high & low in one bulb). The DRLs use this low beam instead of the outer pair of low beams, but are turned off from the factory. That dual filament bulb only ever has its high beam used. The only way to have the DRLs is to go into the ECU with a dealer-level scantool and enable them.

My jeep similrly used the inner lights as DRLs
However, those look like the quarter lights or parking lights?

I thought about flashing the guy in the Jeep GC this morning, but they would’ve thought I was angry at them for something else

This is the problem; there’s no easy way to let someone know HEY YOUR TAILLIGHTS ARE OFF

Yes. I mean, context matters... sure, but in general we humans think we’re under attack when driving and not given an innocent suggestion

I think the problem is that the dash is always backlit now. With analog gauges, if the dash was lit, your lights were on, if it was dark, your lights were off. With a digital dash, it’s always lit, so the indicator people have been using for decades is always telling them their headlights are on.

I think the brightness of the inforainment console is a good indicator (as I’ve only know bright electric dashes) but yeah, it’s just a matter of time before we get some sort of indicator to warn that it’s not sunny anymore. Akin to the snow warning indicator that some cars have

Makes sense, DRLs are usually focused like high beams but at reduced power. In fact I was thinking some cars did it that way (high beam at 50% power maybe)
